Founder Story
It started behind a bar in New York City.
"What should I drink with this cigar?"
One evening while bartending at a cigar lounge in Manhattan, a customer asked a simple question:
"What should I drink with this cigar?"
At first, the answer seemed like part of the ritual. Pairings had always lived in conversation — passed between bartenders, tobacconists, regulars, and longtime enthusiasts.
But later that night, the thought stayed with me:
There should be an app for this.
After searching and finding nothing that truly treated cigar and spirit pairing with the depth, atmosphere, and intention it deserved, the idea for Leaf & Grain was born.
The idea mattered to me because cigars have been part of my life for a long time. I have been smoking cigars since 1997, and over the years that interest became more than a pastime. It became a passion, a culture, and a way of understanding rooms, conversations, craftsmanship, and time.
As a cigar lover and aficionado, I wanted Leaf & Grain to respect that world. I did not want to build something shallow, random, or generic. I wanted to build something that could offer real value to other cigar smokers, whether they are discovering their first serious pairing or refining a palate they have spent years developing.
What began as a small concept slowly became years of research, testing, design, and development — much of it shaped during the isolation of the COVID era.
The goal was never simply to build a database.
It was to create a digital cigar lounge: a place where pairing felt thoughtful, cinematic, useful, and deeply personal.
Months later, the first iOS version of Leaf & Grain was completed. But after a long review process, the app ultimately faced App Store restrictions around tobacco-related content.
The vision did not disappear.
Instead, the platform evolved.
Leaf & Grain is now being built as a Progressive Web App — available across desktop and mobile browsers, installable on devices, and free from traditional app store limitations.
For now, the focus is the foundation: helping people pair cigars and spirits with more confidence, more context, and more pleasure. The basics matter. A good cigar deserves a pour that understands its body, wrapper, finish, sweetness, spice, and mood.
But this is only the beginning. The future of Leaf & Grain includes member access, saved pairings, personal preferences, tasting notes, shareable discoveries, cigar-related editorial, product reviews, venue guidance, and more ways for smokers to build a cellar that reflects their own taste.
Today, Leaf & Grain exists as a curated pairing companion built around slower evenings, better pours, meaningful atmosphere, and the belief that great pairing is part flavor, part ritual, and part memory. Getting it right matters to me because this culture matters to me. My hope is that it becomes useful, beautiful, and worthy of the people who care about the ritual as much as I do.
